MINI celebrated its 50th birthday in 2009. Its presence at the 2009 IAA was the MINI birthday party. And a good birthday party means balloons, confetti, cake and guests offering their congratulations. And these ingredients were spread around over-sized letters arranged on two lines, which divided the stand diagonally and which read: WHAT A BIRTHDAY. IT´S MINI.The design approach featuring an absurd birthday party was architecture as an event. By means of the references to pop art and Monty Python it was borderline between art and kitsch, happening and Britishness, pop culture and irony. Open to interpretation in so many ways it became an integral part of the MINI brand world.

the stage or screen, nor just to presen-tation events and trade shows. It is a design approach, rooted in narrative, that can be applied as well to individual buildings and even to urban environments.
